Filipino, Indonesian detainees riot briefly at Malaysian immigration camp

Nearly 200 Filipino and Indonesian illegal immigrants staged a brief riot at a Malaysian detention camp on Tuesday, shattering windows and clambering over fences, police said. The detainees were upset because they have been held for several months at the detention center in eastern Sabah state on Borneo island following a delay in plans to deport them, said Wong Chong Fui, the deputy police chief of Sabah's capital, Kota Kinabalu.

The men broke through the windows and wooden walls of a cell block where they were being held, then climbed over a security fence to confront immigration officials within the center, Wong said. "They resorted to rioting to demand that their problems be looked into," Wong said. Officials restored order after 15 minutes, when the men agreed to return to their compound, Wong said. There were no immediate reports of any serious injuries, he added.

About 40 police officers were sent to the camp to curb further disturbances, Wong said. Sabah has an extensive land border with Indonesia's Kalimantan province, and is separated from the southern Philippines by a short boat ride. Illegal immigrants often cross the border to seek work in Malaysia, which is wealthier and more stable than its neighbors.

ILLEGALS riot at detention centre

One hundred and ninety eight inmates comprising mostly Indonesians and Pakistanis rioted for 15 minutes at the Menggatal temporary detention centre, Tuesday. The inmates in Block D were upset that four months had passed without any inkling on when their case would be heard and, thus, decided on such measure to bring attention to their grievance. They stormed out of their living quarters and climbed a 10-foot fence before venting their anger on eight Immigration personnel during the 11am incident.

Two personnel were injured when bricks were hurled at them. The bricks also shattered the window of the department's Four Wheel Drive.

Police are investigating the case under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting and warned it would take appropriate action against those responsible. Acting City Police Chief, Supt Wong Chong Fooi, said 50 police personnel from the city headquarters were despatched to contain the situation, but on arrival the immigration officers and the wardens had already brought the situation under control.

The commotion ended about 15 minutes after the Immigration personnel left in their vehicle. He said preliminary investigations showed that the detainees wanted to ask Immigration personnel why they had been kept so long and to expedite their deportation.

"After the incident, the inmates were roll-called by Prison Department personnel looking into security at the centre and escorted them back to their quarters," he said, adding no inmates escaped. It was learnt that the Immigration personnel earlier called up about 20 detainees for an interview regarding an investigation that caused some dissatisfaction among the block D inmates. They started thumping their feet in protest and eventually broke their quarters' walls before climbing the fence encompassing their block.

They then climbed over the main gate to get to the Immigration personnel, picked up several bricks and began hurling them at the personnel. At one point, the Immigration personnel were trying to exit the car park using their four-wheel vehicle but the gates were closed. The personnel lodged a report and soon after they managed to escape.
